Beastly Book Review – Kendra Chronicles Series

So this is my Beastly book review. It is a book by Alex Flinn and it’s the first of a four-book series: Kendra Chronicles. There is actually one more book -extra content – with a different POV of this one.

It’s a standalone, though. The books are connected through Kendra, not our main characters.

It is inspired by the Beauty and the Beast, as you may have figured out from the title. 😀

The story starts with Kyle. Popular, rich, good-looking and with the attitude to match.

He’s in ninth-grade and he believes what his dad says: “People shouldn’t have to look at ugly people”. So when, a classmate, Kendra tells him that this is wrong, he decides to play a prank on her. He invites her to the school dance as his date. What she doesn’t know is that he also invites the hottest girl in the school as well. Or does she?

The dance is on and when Kendra comes, he humiliates her. But she doesn’t get offended, she just says: ” You ‘ll see…”.

Girl with a sceptre on a beachSo later this night, she shows up at his place and transforms him into what he really is on the inside. A beast. But a few hours ago, he did a good deed, so Kendra gives him a chance to change back. The only hope he has is if he finds someone to love him for what he really is in two years.

In the beginning, his dad and he are trying to find a way to help him medically. They go to a dozen doctors but everyone says the same. He cannot get fixed.

His dad moved him to another house. Kyle gets a tutor – a blind one – to tutor him but also, so he can have someone to talk to. Slowly Kyle starts to realize some things about life – his life – and how much he missed.

Beauty and the beastOne year into the curse Kyle – well, he prefers to be called Adrian now – so, Adrian hears someone breaking in. Catching up with him, the burglar offers him his daughter so he can save himself. Adrian sees that his daughter is Lindy, the girl who gave him his second chance, so he agrees. He starts to hope for the first time since the curse. He wants to try to break his curse.

Lindy comes but she’s terrified. Now he has to find a way to make her trust him and in less than a year fall in love with him.

Favourite character

Honestly, I’m not sure about his one. Jeez, it’s rarely easy to choose only one.

We mostly read about Adrian – I like it more than Kyle, so I’m gonna call him Adrian. Well, we do see things from his side, so it’s easy to sympathize with him. And he has, indeed, been through a lot.

And then there’s Lindy. She’s been through worse actually and she’s such an amazing person. How can you not admire that?

Why I love this book

In general, I really like variations of famous stories in a contemporary setting.

It is one of the books that teach you that it doesn’t matter how beautiful you are on the outside, but how beautiful you are on the inside.

Random thoughts

  • There is a movie based on the book starring Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens. It’s pretty good and, to be honest, I saw the movie and then, I found out there is a book. 😯 Yep! There are differences, but it’s a good movie.
  • There is another book – extra content: Lindy’s diary. It’s the same story from Lindy’s POV. I think that you’ll like it. Some things that happened can have another meaning when we see what Lindy’s thinking too. As they say, everything is a matter of perspective…

  1. Great Post! I actually have been looking for a book recently that I find interesting. Finding books for me is very difficult because I am very picky when it comes to books. Based off of what you just described, I believe I may have found my next book to read as it sounds very interesting and a great read!
    Thank you for the suggestion!

  2. Nice review here and I really had fun reading it.
You spark the readers’ interest to check out this book. Nicely written, to the point and an enjoyable review.

  3. Jenny a book right up my alley. You might want to include a Kobo link for us Kobo eReader fanatics. I checked and Kobo do have the Beastly eBook.

I read a review recently on a modernised Scarlet Pimpernel, the original super hero. This was in play format and the short looked brilliant.

So I am with you in, turned upside down and inside out oldies.

    A very tantalising review.

    1. Thank you very much!

I haven’t seen this yet, but I will as soon as I can. I’ll put the Kobo links, too.

      Have fun!

  4. Amazing post I must say…Your passion for reading definitely shows in the way you write about the books. The way this review was written really had me captivated; it was very interesting and enjoyable to read.

I like the fact that you not only gave the storyline but also had that extra input of what you loved most about the book.

    Thanks a lot!
