Ruby Red Books – A Story Beyond Time & Space (Precious Stone Trilogy)

Hello everyone!

This is my Ruby Red book review. The Ruby Red books (Ruby Red, Sapphire Blue, Emerald Green) are the three books of the Precious Stone Trilogy, written by Kerstin Gier.

Our heroine, Gwyneth, lives in a great house with her family. Her very extended family. She lives with her mother, her younger brother and her sister. Her grandmother, her aunt, Glenda, her cousin, Charlotte and her great-aunt live with them, too, in the same house. Few people, huh? At least the house is a big one…

So she has her family, her best friend Leslie and, oh, a time-travel gene going around in her family. Now, how awesome is that?

Well, not so much when your incredibly-good-at-everything cousin, Charlotte, is the one who has the gene. Like she needs another reason to brag about…

And then… bam! Everything changes…

Woman in red dress near the seaThe time – travelling gene gets activated after you have turned 16. So when Charlotte gets 16, her family starts to search for the signs – dizziness, headaches, nausea.

When this morning, Charlotte starts to get dizzy while at school, Gwyneth takes her home as her family told her. However, by the time the girls arrive home, Charlotte is fine.

Well, Gwyneth starts to get dizzy now. But surely it’s because she has missed lunch. After all, Charlotte is the one who was born in the day the time-traveller was supposed to be born. Gwyneth’s birth date was the day after.

Dark street at night

But next time Gwyneth gets out of the house, her stomach flip-flops and she travels to another time. Terrified, she’s not sure what she has to do. I mean, scientists have calculated it and her cousin is supposed to have the gene, not her. So she tries to calm down. Maybe it’s all in her mind.

Then again, tonight, she time-travels again. This time people notice her and think she’s a burglar. Running away, luckily, she gets away by travelling back.

The following day, she time-travels for the third time while at school and she lands in the middle of a ball. Hiding behind a curtain, she sees a couple getting in the room. Imagine her surprise when she realizes the girl has the same face as her. The girl is her.

She travels back in her own time before the boy sees her, but there’s no denial now. She has to say the truth. She calls her mom, Grace, and waits for her to come. As soon as she comes, she takes Gwyneth and they leave. They are going to them. The guardians, the lodge of Count Saint-Germain. A secret society that was founded by him hundreds of years ago to protect the time-travellers, for the good of mankind. Or so he said…

Grace and Gwyneth reach their destination. Grace tells them that Gwyneth is the time-traveller and not Charlotte but they don’t manage to persuade all of them, though. However, Gwyneth is taken to a safe place for her next journey in case she tells the truth.

On the way there, she meets the other living time-traveller, Gideon. After she takes a look at him, she realizes, he’s the boy she was with when she went to the past.

Chronograph in the first movie: Ruby Red

After a while, she travels to the past again and when she comes back, the Guardians realize that they’ve been wrong all these years and they have prepared the wrong person. Gwyneth is, from now on, a part of something she struggles to understand.

What does the Count really want?

Why did Lucy and Paul, the last living time-travellers, steal the chronograph and did they go permanently to the past?

And how easy will it be to live a normal life after this?

Favourite character

I think my favourite character is Gideon.

First, because he knows so many things. I guess I would too if, when I was a kid, I tried to learn about them instead of watching cartoons and reading novels, but still, I’m kinda jealous.

Second, he has so many things going on and he’s still pretty calm. I get stressed very much very easily, so I really admire this.

Why I love this book

  • I love the characters. Even Charlotte. I actually feel kind of sorry for her. It’s not her fault – ok, yes, it is a little her fault-, but mostly it’s the way she grew up. You can’t blame her for that. So not all the characters, I don’t like Glenda, her mom for the way she grew her up.
And well, duh, I don’t like the villain who must not be named because it’ll ruin the surprise. 😛
  • The time – travelling part of the book is very well-organised. Except for one little thing in Emerald Green about James. I’ll not say any more details, though, because, duh, I’m not a spoilsport. The rest of it is great AND there is an incredibly funny event that starts in Sapphire Blue and gets revealed in Emerald Green. I just love this scene. If you’ve read the books, you definitely know what I’m talking about!

Random thoughts

  • The story is very fast-developing. From the beginning of Ruby Red until the end of Emerald Green, it’s what? Two weeks? I’ll go back and see. With all the time-travel, it seems longer, though.
I kind of feel sorry for Gwyneth. Imagine if your life changed so fast!
  • There are movies based on the books. Especially the first one is really nice. You should check it out, too. I’ll leave you the trailer here.
  • This book has a lot of quotes and hidden meanings. When you read all the books and go back and read them again, you’ll notice a lot more things than the first time. It’s these details that make the books not good but incredible.

Favourite quote

For a star goes up to the sky above, if it freely chooses to die for love.

I love this quote so much, I’m thinking of making a necklace with this on. 😆

  1. it has been a long time since I have read a book that I got lost in… like years – even more rare is reading a book review that actually makes me want to read and yours did just that! I want to read these! I got lost in imagination just reading a review so I can only imagine how amazing these books are!

  2. Man, I haven’t thought of a good book to pick back up in a while. The Ruby Red Books seem like they will scratch that perfect series itch I’ve been plagued with for so long.

Thank you for this great overview of the series! I’m looking forward to your next one!

  3. Thanks for posting this. I was delighted to get a brief synopsis–one that gives some story without giving every detail away. A real gem snippet to get my mouth watering for more of the story. It is also nice to read others’ thoughts about a book.

  4. I love books and stories that allow you to leave the real world. It is a stress relief to let your mind go and follow the characters through their journey. The books you review seem perfect to satisfy that desire.

    1. Thank you very much!
I know what you mean. I love reading stories, too and it’s really nice to let your worries aside for a while and get lost in another world. 🙂

  5. I like your review. I’m always looking for some new books to read and I have a special weakness for time travel. I’d never heard of this series but I’ll give it a try after reading your review. I like how you pointed out that the time traveling is organized, some writers make it confusing and hard to follow. Thanks for this detailed review.

  6. I’m always looking for good sci-fi/fantasy fiction. Young adult books tend to be the most interesting (not to mention quickest to read) in these genres, too.

And this book series looks interesting. I’ve heard of it before, but never picked it up. And I certainly didn’t realize it was about time travel. The titles make it seem more fairytale related. I’ll look into now, thanks!
