Should I Write My Book? – What To Consider Before Deciding If You Want To Start Writing A Book!

Hello everyone!Should I write my book?

So have you ever wondered “Should I write my book?

If I have to guess, I’d say yes!

So, let’s see a few things before deciding if you’ll actually do it.

Can I Write A Book?

Writing with a typewriterYes, everyone can write a book. I believe that all of us hide a writer inside. All you have to do is let them free.

Does this mean that everyone can do it easily? No. For most people, it’s very difficult to write a book. You have to practise a lot to be good at this. There are very few, if any, that are so natural on this that they don’t need to fail a bunch of times, before succeeding.

Actually, scratch this, I’m sure that there’s no one who’s so natural to this that they don’t fail.

But if you think every day: “I want to write a book“, then you should try it out.

Why Do You Want To Write Your Book?

A person leaning on a questionmarkThat’s one of the main questions you have to ask yourself before starting. If all you want is the money that seems to come with it, I’ll have to disappoint you. A lot of books out there don’t give a ton of money back to their authors. And when I say a lot, I mean the vast majority of them.

Publishing a book is way easier now that it was before. But this comes with a disadvantage. You can publish your book easily, but that applies to everyone out there. So with thousands of books getting published, it’s not easy to make your own stand out, even if it’s a good one.

Never mind that you would have to invest money if not in publishing, then in advertising.

Words From Tim Ferriss

Here is a video about this from Tim Ferriss, the writer of The 4-hour workweek, one of the things that changed my life. Definitely, one of the persons I’d like to meet in my life!

Write Your OWN Book

Don’t just copy other people’s work and hope for the best. People will find out eventually and either you’ll lose your reputation or you’ll go to jail. Neither is a nice result.

Plus, would you feel really good about taking others’ credits? Well, if you do, you shouldn’t! 😀

Non-fiction

Stealing from a safe boxLet’s say first that you want to write non-fiction. You found a good book and you thought that it’s great material. Well, guess what? A lot of people thought the same.

Why should someone read your book and not the original one? After all, it came first and it has the reputation of being a good one. How easy will it be to persuade people getting a new book when there’s a great already-established one?

Fiction

Now, if we’re talking about fiction, it’s easier to not get caught legally, but people will figure it out.

Don’t tell me that you haven’t been there where you’ve read two books and you thought that the author of the second one just read the first one and after seeing its success, they decided to write a similar one. They just change a few parameters and voila! A new book…

Well, they get caught eventually. And they’re getting humiliated on and off the Internet. And it’s getting easier and easier to spot books that are knockoffs of others. So don’t do it!

How Much Money Will I Earn And How Soon?

A girl with coins in front of her eyesNO, don’t even go there.

If all you think is about the money, then you’re gonna be greatly disappointed. As I said before, it’s not so easy to make money and in most cases, you’ll have to invest money in advertising.

If you’re in need of money immediately and you think that’s the way to do it, then probably no, you shouldn’t.

Just imagine how much time you’ll have to spend in order to write your book, edit it and advertise it!

To Write Or Not To Write?

That seems to be the question. If you have thought about it and you believe you can do it, then I’d say: “Yes!!!”. Ok… what’s the worst that could happen? Not selling.

This is not the end of the world…

But you have to believe in it. Writing a book is not an easy job. It takes time, effort and it has almost no rewarding at all.

Of course, there’s the mental rewarding that you do something you like and you get some progress done in it. But there’s not any financial recompense or anything else countable. Plus, you have to make a living somehow.

A boy helping his friendSomething that helps a lot in the writing stage is if you have people around you who support you in this new endeavour.

So yes, if you have people in your life that you believe that they’d be in your side encouraging you when you’re feeling down, then I’d suggest to tell them what you’re doing. It’s going to help you a lot.

Final Thoughts

Here are some things to consider before deciding if you want to start a book. So, if you still want to do it, go ahead! Try it and see how it goes.

  1. Ha, love this post! I’ve always wanted to write a book, but always felt that I’m not a good enough writer. But so what if it doesn’t sell, or not everyone likes it. It’s the process that counts and anyway, the next one will always be better!
